This is a crazy week in that there are many pullouts for the various plays, field trips and early vacations. Make sure you check the blog and keep abreast with the work.

In class work: completion of the responses to Mark Twain's The Boys' Ambition, an excerpt from Life on the Mississippi. This was handed out last Friday and there is a copy on the blog.

We are reviewing passive voice today, as an extension of Chopin's development of characterization in her short story The Story of an Hour.

You have a the following handout. If you are absent, please just complete the following.

Directions: Rewrite the following, so that passive constructions have been changed to active verbs. WARNING! Some of these sentences do not use passive verbs or are better off left in the passive, so this exercise will also engage your attention in recognizing passive constructions and in using them when appropriate.

The tragedy of Ethan Frome in the story there are alot of economic struggles that he faces. The story takes place in starkfield where it is basically cold all the time and is surrounded by very horrible winters. The scene in which the people are in is very isolating from the world. In his eyes his imagination in his mind is causin him not to kiss or be with the woman that he actually loves he sees zeenas face instead which is very odd. Ethan and Mattie cant go on there owns because they dont have enough money to be able to live off on their own. Ethan finds out later that he could not leave zeena which forces him to try and think of something else to do on top of the major stress he all ready has as this point. When Ethan and Mattie finally figure out that they couldnt do what they pleased which was run away they decided to unfortunatly kill themselves.
The main thing that led Ethan to this sad ending was the fact that he didnt know what he really wanted and couldnt really find another way so that he would be happy.
